Celebrating the NHS Birthday: An Interview with our Managing Director Alan Wilson

As we celebrate the NHS’s birthday, it’s good to reflect on how partnerships, like the one between ModuleCo Healthcare and the NHS, have enhanced healthcare delivery. For the past 17 years, we’ve supported the NHS by offering innovative finance solutions, ensuring that cutting-edge clinical capacity is both accessible and affordable. By addressing immediate needs and future-proofing for a more streamlined healthcare system, we’re proud to contribute to our communities. Here’s to many more years of collaboration and dedication.

We ask our Managing Director, Alan Wilson, to reflect on the importance of the NHS, the value of this incredible partnership, and the chance to celebrate another milestone together.

How does it feel to support the NHS as it celebrates another year of service?

Supporting the NHS as it celebrates another year of service feels incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. The NHS is a cornerstone of public health and wellbeing, providing essential medical care to millions.

Each project we undertake with the NHS is not just a professional achievement; it’s a personal one. Knowing the immediate positive impact our facilities have on patient care and staff morale is what drives us every day.

As we celebrate the NHS’s birthday, I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such a vital institution.

Tell us more about the work MCH does with NHS Trusts.

We collaborate closely with NHS Trusts to understand their clinical need, working with their surgical and estate teams to design a building that meets their exact requirements. We then tailor the funding options to ensure they align with their budgetary and affordability needs. By understanding the specific challenges and goals of each Trust, our bespoke agreements facilitate the rapid deployment of our clinical facilities while ensuring fiscal efficiency and sustainability.

How do bespoke finance solutions meet the evolving needs of the NHS?

ModuleCo Healthcare’s bespoke finance solutions are tailored to meet the evolving needs of individual NHS Trusts by offering flexible, scalable, and cost-effective funding options that support the rapid deployment of modular healthcare facilities. These solutions are designed to be highly adaptable to changes in budgets and finance regulations, ensuring that healthcare organisations can maintain financial stability and compliance.

When did you personally realise the impact of what MCH does and the value of the facilities you’re able to deliver?

The truth is that every project and facility has had a significant impact on NHS Trusts. It’s the very nature of what we do. Over the 12 years I have worked for MCH, we have had some fantastic feedback from NHS Trusts and their staff highlighting the difference our facilities have made to both staff and patients. This feedback highlights the importance of the work we do and is a reminder that our work goes beyond just numbers and contracts; it directly affects people’s lives.

Why do you think there has been an increase in demand for funding modular construction projects?

Many NHS Trusts are faced with escalating patient demand and ageing infrastructure with increasing pressure on available capital budgets. Our facilities have an impact on hospitals as they make new facilities increasingly accessible even when capital isn’t available.

As a bespoke finance solutions provider, we are committed to supporting NHS Trusts in meeting its infrastructure needs through innovative and tailored funding solutions. We allow the investment into new facilities without requiring outright capital or whilst allowing further investment elsewhere.

Give us an example of a project you’re proud of.

All projects bring an incredible sense of achievement because they meet a real need to improve our healthcare provision across the UK. Our recent project at Neath Port Talbot Hospital for Swansea Bay University Health Board, for example, was delivered to help address the backlog in elective Orthopaedic procedures reducing waiting times for their patients. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic more than half of patients had been waiting over two years for surgery. The new facility which is a Centre of Excellence in the region allowed them to offer a ring-fenced elective service to address the backlog as quickly as possible.

What’s the best feedback you could get about your facilities?

Feedback from NHS staff and patients about our facilities is always overwhelmingly positive. They often praise our facilities for being modern, clean, and welcoming environments that contribute to a positive healthcare experience. We even have surgeons literally fighting to use our facilities!

Why do you think offsite construction has improved the efficiency and quality of healthcare facilities in recent years?

Offsite construction has significantly enhanced the efficiency and quality of healthcare facilities. Most of the building process takes place in a controlled factory environment, reducing construction timelines, and minimising on-site disruption, which is particularly important within a hospital setting.

How will the modular construction industry evolve in the future?

We expect to see an increasing demand for flexible financing options tailored to the unique needs of hospitals. There will be a shift towards financial models that optimise project cash flow, minimise risk and enhance overall project feasibility. We also expect a clear shift towards net zero with the NHS’ plan to reach net zero by 2040, which will result in the further adoption of MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) due to its reduced manufacturing waste and fewer on-site deliveries.

What role will ModuleCo Healthcare play in the future of the NHS?

There has been a significant increase in the adoption of MMC by NHS Trusts in recent years and I think that will continue for years to come. This is because the speed and minimal site disruption offer significant benefits to NHS Trusts, meaning they can continue to deliver high-quality care efficiently. Our focus is to continue developing flexible financing options that address upfront costs, long-term savings, and operational efficiencies, both parties can optimise resource allocation and accelerate the delivery of healthcare facilities. This will help ensure that our NHS remains a pillar of our community for years to come.

What message would you like to convey to the NHS staff and the wider community on this special occasion?

On this special day, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated NHS staff whose unwavering support and tireless efforts ensure our healthcare system remains robust and resilient. It is through your hard work that we continue to deliver essential services to those in need. Together, we celebrate the NHS and its profound impact on our lives, reaffirming our commitment to supporting and strengthening this vital institution.

Happy Birthday NHS!
