Controlling and Preventing Infections in Healthcare Facilities

At ModuleCo Healthcare (MCH) we are passionate about providing the best quality modular healthcare facilities to our customers. One of the most important aspects of a healthcare facility, in particular operating theatres, is their ability to not only help control but also prevent the spread of infection.

One of the key elements built into theatre suites to help prevent infection is the ventilation systems. MCH is fully compliant with HTM 03-01 which specifies the requirements needed for specialised ventilation systems within healthcare settings. We’ve outlined below how some of the features of the systems we choose help Trusts control the spread of infection within their hospitals.

Air Flow

As with many systems of this type, the ventilation systems that are installed in MCH theatres are designed to provide filtered fresh air into the facility and extract stale air. However, in addition to this they provide a cascade design of room pressures which results in critical areas such as operating rooms being over pressured. The resulting difference of pressures between rooms prevents potentially infectious air from entering the operating room and forces air that is possibly contaminated out.

Cleaning and Upkeep

A second feature is that the ductwork on our ventilation systems is designed in such a way that it can be cleaned and sanitised internally on a regular basis. Furthermore, as designs have improved, our newer theatres are now installed with systems which have fully washable internal surfaces. The ability to wash the internal surfaces of our ventilation systems provides a significant improvement to infection control.

Design Features

We also provide customers with a range of options depending on the final usage of the theatre. We are able to add specific features during the design stage as required. For example, when a theatre is going to be used for orthopaedic procedures a UCV canopy can be specified and installed. Alongside this, for the preparation of equipment customers have the option of either a lay-up prep or sterile pack store dependent on requirements.
