Earlier this year, ModuleCo Healthcare delivered the first phase of a modular theatre expansion for the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham.

Our Managing Director, Alan Wilson, joined the Trust’s Executive Director of Strategy and Delivery, Professor Philip Begg, to speak exclusively to Health Estates Journal about the new development.

As one of the biggest specialist orthopaedic units in Europe, the Trust urgently required new operating theatres to meet existing and future demand and was looking for a cost-effective way to drive additional revenue.

Following some initial reservations about using modular construction, largely because the hospital is a varied mixture of designs and construction types, the Trust paid a visit to one of our flagship projects at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. From here, they were able to view our high-quality facilities and dispel any preconceptions around modular builds.

As Alan and Professor Begg discuss within the article, a modular solution seemed to tick all the boxes for ROH Trust. It was cost-effective, quick and provided little to no disruption to the daily running of the hospital.

In the article, Alan explains how the new state-of-the-art theatres were dismantled into 26 modules, before being craned into the site over six days – all with minimal disruption.

All of our projects are designed bespoke to fit the requirements of the trust in question, and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital was no different. The nursing team were invited to offer insight into the layout of the wards, encompassing everything from the distribution of the beds to the location of the bathrooms, to ensure it was fit for purpose.

The Trust agreed to a managed services contract with MCH for an initial long-term contract of ten years.

We are thrilled to be involved in the delivery of phase two of this scheme, which will comprise two further theatres and 11 more beds, which could be ready for the go-ahead in 2020. Encouragingly, the Trust has already seen the benefits of modular build solutions and advised they would invest in more modular facilities in the future.
