Acute Medical Unit & Ward Extension
ModuleCo Healthcare (MCH), together with our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, have successfully handedover a brand-new modular Acute Medical Unit at Maidstone Hospital in Kent. The facility consists of 30 modules and will provide 5 no. 4 bed bay wards, 2 no. single en-suite rooms, a 3-bay treatment room and general support accommodation associated with this type of facility.
Our fast track offsite construction meant that we were able to deliver the modules to site within just 19 weeks of receiving the order whilst managing and co ordinating the ground works for the project.
The building has been supplied on a long-term basis as part of a Managed Services Agreement, procured through the NHS Shared Business Services Framework.
Benefits
- Turnkey package with control of the design, manufacturing, enabling works, delivery and finance in the hands of a single, totally responsible contractor.
- Early engagement with MCH, who are structured to control all phases of the project, enabled the Trust to concentrate on their core activities
- Trust was able to rapidly create an additional 22 beds allowing the re-purposing of central bed space within the main hospital building
- MCH Hire arrangements enabled the project, including the pre-construction works to take place as the trust had no capital funds available
“The new modular facility will provide a relief to the current pressures put on both A&E as well as ambulatory care, in a new modern setting.”
“It’s always a great feeling to hand over a brand new facility to an NHS trust, it brings together all the meetings, planning, drawings, and proposals, allowing the trust to physically see the meticulous detail that has gone into constructing this facility using our modern offsite construction methods within such a short timescale.”
“We have no doubt Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust will enjoy their new building, but more importantly it now complements the already high standard level of care provided to the local community with the highest standard of facility.”

About Project
ModuleCo Healthcare (MCH) worked with manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, and MMM Medical Equipment UK Ltd (MMM) to design, build and construct a new Sterile Services Department (SSD) at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Our Client’s Challenge
Once the existing SSD had been demolished and the groundworks complete the new facility was constructed on the same site. The facility is made up of fourteen 14m x 4m modules and was designed in such a way that the MMM specialist equipment was installed into the modules prior to delivery.
Our Solution
The facility was provided on a 15 year Managed Service Agreement which combine the costs of the entire end-to-end project into one manageable, monthly fee allowing the Trust to focus on delivering healthcare services.
Alan Wilson, Managing Director at ModuleCo Healthcare says: “We’ve been creating modular facilities for NHS trusts for almost 20 years, but this was the first time we’ve been commissioned specifically to develop an SSD.
“The main objective was to find a solution to replace the hospital’s previous SSD, but this needed to be delivered as quickly as possible to minimise service disruption across the hospital.”
“With worsening capacity issues facing the NHS, it’s refreshing to see NHS Trusts embracing Modern Methods of Construction like this. Alongside our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, we’re confident we’ve developed a bespoke facility that will be pivotal in supporting more patients at the hospital for years to come.”
